Summary:
Silver Burdett, in "Evelyn Glennie, Solo Percussionist" describes a miracle by telling us how to be determined no matter what the difficulties are. For example Evelyn is a deaf girl in northeast Scotland who becomes a talented musician. Influenced by her mother sense to music as an organist in the church. Evelyn lost her hearing by the time, but she became successful with her talent as a percussionist. Despite her problem with hearing, she insists on developing by studying music at the Royal College in London. Then, she discovers her passion to be a solo percussionist. To illustrate her issue with hearing, " Glennie can hear sounds and can tell them apart even though she cannot hear the way she did long ago". Evelyn becomes successful with her hearing loss. Because she determined, she won Grammy award in 1986. "Evelyn wants people to focus on her music rather than on her hearing loss".
Response:
In sum, this story gives us an example of how to insist on achieving our goals in this life. We should not give up. We must strive till our dream comes true. I agree with the author that we have to see Evelyn's accomplishments not her hearing loss. Like Evelyn I don't like to be weak and fragile. I also like to be strong and determined. I wish the author had described Evelyn's life in the college. I liked the author's language. It is clear, and the reader can understand from the first read. Evelyn's story a perfect lesson for everyone, and I would recommend this story to others for that reason.

ReplyDeleteI like this kind of story because it gives me a power to be strong. I really respect Evelyn Glennie because I`m not sure I can be determined to work for my dream if I was in her situation. But I know how important the effort is because when I was in soccer team in my high school, at first I couldn`t get the position, but I really practice hard by myself and finally I got the position. I recognized the effort will bear fruit then. So I totally agree with your idea. And I recommend you a blind Japanese who is a pianist, Hironobu Tsujii. He is also a hard worker and won the world-famous competition.

ReplyDeleteWell ,,,, I have heard and read about Evelyn Glennie. Indeed, she is really fantastic human. She has a fabulous power and resoluteness. I am still wondering who many purposes and goals that we lose it, for we are not resolute. Back to your response and your opinion, I absolutely go with the author and you when you said that "I agree with the author that we have to see Evelyn's accomplishments not her hearing loss," so we should focus on our goals and purposes by trying to make it .
Thank you so much ,,,,
Hi, Maryam. This article is so impressive, and your summary and opinion are very understandable. I agree with you that we shouldn’t give up until our dream comes true even though there is a handicap. Evelyn didn’t give up, so she could succeed. It is much harder for the people who cannot hear to become a professional musician than we think. She made a lot of efforts. I want to know more about her.
ReplyDeleteI recommend you to read this website: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobuyuki_Tsujii
This website shows Nobuyuki Tsujii. He is blind. He has also a handicap, but became a pianist and realized his dream like Evelyn.
Hi Maryam,
ReplyDeleteThanks you so for this interesting article. I agree with you about the authors how has a clear language, he could transfer the ideas to us. Let me talk about the major point which is deafness. I would like to say that no body can stop any person for doing his/her hobbies.Who has a dream for doing something, he/she can do it if they have a trust of themselves.I have a friend who can't speak with us ;however, he found another way for speaking with us which is sign language. We learned this language when he learned it in order to communicate with him because his dream was that he can understand us and we can understand him.
Hi Maryam. I think your summary and response is clear to understand. Thank you for sharing good story. How can she be a percussionist even though she can't hear. I really impressed by her accomplishment. I can't imagine the time that she has tried to be a percussionist. That must be hard. I find her talk in Ted. If you want to see her, you can follow the link. The title is Evelyn Glennie: How to truly listen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IU3V6zNER4g
