“Beauty Is Not Just Smaller Than Life” by Leonard Pitts JR.

Summary
Pitts JR. Leonard writes in the article, “Beauty Is Not Just Smaller Life,” how the media affects girls, and that there are a lot of girls who care to follow the standards of weight. However, she argues that people should be satisfied with themselves. The author believes that our realization of beauty has become different because of the media. The article shows us how much the girls around the world suffer from their diet in order lose weight. Leonard further mentions the feminist argument, where men should stop objectifying girls, but the author disagrees, saying that demand is not practical.  Instead, Leonard provides two solutions to the audience. First, the people who control on the media should think more about this issue. Second, the people who care about these measures should focus on our girls in our family who are closest to us.
Response
In sum, the author shows us a picture in this article how most women and girls are affected by the media. I totally agree with author that nowadays most of us, especially girls are influenced by the media. They do not think if these standards are appropriate for them or not. Also, I agree with the author that she would like the people who control media to be more thoughtful about all beauty standards including women and girls of all body types. I afraid that most of negative results of following these standards happen to our family girls, so I cannot agree more that the media have to be more circumspect and aware to protect women and girls lives. I am really surprised how the media can be oblivious that much toward the women's health. I agree with Pitts that the standards of beauty have changed nowadays. I really appreciated that the author points out that all these changes happen because of media, and the media become more important in our lives. A complete picture emerges, and I would recommend this article to others for that reason.

Short Story Reaction "Learn and Earn" By Stephen

Think Deeply
“For time and the world do not stand still. Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or the present are certain to miss the future.” John F. Kennedy. This meaningful message matches with Stephen’s short story, “Learn and Earn.” The story talks about two different kinds of people, and the advantages and disadvantages of being like one of them. Stephen delivers to the readers the idea that we have to think deeply to be creative and aspire more to be more successful.
“Chuan and Jing” work together in same company, yet despite the fact that both of them work hard, only Jing gets promoted by the boss. Jing becomes a sales executive, but his friend Chuan does not progress in his career; most certainly because of his neglectfulness. “One day Chuan can not take it anymore and tenders his resignation to the boss.” This shows us that Chuan does not even think to improve himself. He only keeps thinking in bad way, and he gives up.
While Chuan thinks he deserves more because he works hard, he does not consider which has prevented him from getting the promotion. “The boss did not value hard working staff, but only promoted those who flattered him.” This is what keeps Chuan backward. Chuan always does what the boss asks him to do without any creativity, which has limited him and put him in small box.
Likewise, if we want to improve and reach higher positions, we have to think more before we embark. We have to be meticulous to be successful. For example, the boss decides to give Chuan a lesson in order to make him understand what has kept him from progressing. The boss asks Chuan and Jing to do the same task: “Go and find someone selling watermelon in the market.”  However, both of their answers are different. Chuan is limited in his answer; he does only what the boss asks him to do. On the other hand, Jing is creative, and he thinks more deeply. Jing brings more information for the boss than the boss has asked him for. Indeed, Jing always makes his boss surprised because he is creative and he goes beyond expectations. Chuan realizes after this mission that he has to change himself and think more in order to have a shiny future.
The short story, "Learn and Earn," provides us with a useful and amazing theme. The more we think deeply, the more we guarantee an awesome future to ourselves. To be successful necessitates several things, but the most important thing is to be observant. We have to be incisive because the life is not easy.

"Evelyn Glennie, Solo Percussionist" by Silver Burdett

Summary:

Silver Burdett, in "Evelyn Glennie, Solo Percussionist" describes a miracle by telling us how to be determined no matter what the difficulties are. For example Evelyn is a deaf girl in northeast Scotland who becomes a talented musician. Influenced by her mother sense to music as an organist in the church. Evelyn lost her hearing by the time, but she became successful with her talent as a percussionist. Despite her problem with hearing, she insists on developing by studying music at the Royal College in London. Then, she discovers her passion to be a solo percussionist. To illustrate her issue with hearing, " Glennie can hear sounds and can tell them apart even though she cannot hear the way she did long ago". Evelyn becomes successful with her hearing loss. Because she determined, she won Grammy award in 1986. "Evelyn wants people to focus on her music rather than on her hearing loss".

Response:

In sum, this story gives us an example of how to insist on achieving our goals in this life. We should not give up. We must strive till our dream comes true. I agree with the author that we have to see Evelyn's accomplishments not her hearing loss. Like Evelyn I don't like to be weak and fragile. I also like to be strong and determined. I wish the author had described Evelyn's life in the college. I liked the author's language. It is clear, and the reader can understand from the first read. Evelyn's story a perfect lesson for everyone, and I would recommend this story to others for that reason.
